See the Ring Nebula (M57) from Teide National Park, Tenerife

Deep-sky stargazing in Tenerife

High above the clouds in Tenerife, where the air is crisp and the sky is free from light pollution, lies one of the best places in Europe to spot deep-sky wonders — including the extraordinary Ring Nebula (M57).

This glowing relic of a dying star is a must-see for stargazers, and thanks to the island’s unique conditions, it’s visible with remarkable clarity. Join Night Skies Tenerife to see the Ring Nebula through high-powered telescopes, guided by expert astronomers who’ll bring its cosmic story to life.

What Is the Ring Nebula?

The Ring Nebula (Messier 57) is a planetary nebula located about 2,300 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. Formed from the outer layers of a dying star, it appears as a smoky, glowing ring suspended in space — a breathtaking example of how stars end their lives.

While it looks like a ring through amateur telescopes, longer exposures and larger instruments reveal a complex 3D structure of glowing gas, with colours ranging from blue in the centre to red on the edges.

When to See the Ring Nebula in Tenerife

The Ring Nebula is a summer highlight (May to September), best viewed in June, July & August when Lyra is high in the sky.

Where to See the Ring Nebula in Tenerife

The ideal place to view the Ring Nebula is from the high-altitude, dark-sky zone of Teide National Park — one of the world’s top stargazing destinations.

At over 2,000 metres above sea level, away from city lights and humidity, Teide offers incredible sky transparency. With Night Skies Tenerife, you’ll observe M57 through powerful telescopes and enjoy a fully guided sky tour from an exclusive, handpicked location.
