Discover Arcturus: Tenerife’s Celestial Highlight with Night Skies Tenerife
If you’re visiting Tenerife between March and July, don’t miss your chance to witness Arcturus – the brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere.
Visible from the clear, dark skies of Teide National Park, Arcturus appears as a brilliant orange-red point of light, and is a key feature of our popular Sunset & Stargazing Tours. It's not just a star — it's a showstopper.
What Makes Arcturus So Special?
Arcturus is a red giant located around 37 light-years away in the constellation Boötes. It shines more than 100 times brighter than the Sun and is easily identified by its warm, amber glow. Arcturus is not only stunning to observe, but also a window into the future of stars like our own Sun.

At Night Skies Tenerife, we highlight Arcturus as part of our expert-led sky tour, using powerful telescopes, laser pointers, and a healthy dose of astronomy storytelling to bring this ancient star to life.
When and Where to See Arcturus in Tenerife
Arcturus becomes a major feature of the night sky from late winter through midsummer, with its peak brightness in April, May, and June. To locate it, simply follow the arc of the Big Dipper — a well-known star-hopping trick remembered by the phrase: “Follow the arc to Arcturus.”.
From our stargazing location in Teide National Park, far from city lights and over 2,000 metres above sea level, you’ll enjoy crystal-clear views of Arcturus and dozens of other deep-sky objects.
